Dear JCI member and Guests,
This month we will be reading ” Forty Rules of Love “.
The Forty Rules of Love by Elif Shafak, a Turkish writer. Elif Shafak is one of the most feminist writers in Turkey. The Forty Rules of Love is one of her best sellers.
The main character, Ella Rubinstein a 40-year old housewife with an ideal, yet monotonous life; she lives in an elegant big house in Northampton, Massachusetts with her husband, three children and a dog. Her life, like still waters, is a predictable sequence of habits, needs and preferences, until a stone is hurled out of nowhere into the tranquil pond of her life. After building her life around her family for twenty years, Ella wakes up one day in the fall of 2008 and files for a divorce, abandoning her kitchen, her dog, her children, her neighbors, her unfaithful husband, her cookbooks and homemade-bread recipes. Turning her back on all that is familiar and safe, she ventures on an unexpected journey through time, exploring love, adventure and spirituality.
