Lecture on “Transmitting memories through book projects” at the French Institute of Jordan
How to transmit a society’s traditions and value system from one generation to the next can be a challenge. Documenting the elders’ wise words and legacies and the youths’ yearnings and aspirations for freedom is essential. Achieving this enables a society and a country to maintain its equilibrium and identity. The digital era of the 21st century has created a rupture between the older and younger generations. So, we ask: does a book still serve as a useful tool for the transmission of memories?
This is the challenge facing journalist and author, Cristina L’Homme, who is collecting life narratives in order to publish them in a book. Her associate, the experienced photographer Stephane Herbert, tries to express these stories through photographs and pictures.
L’Homme and Herbert will be presenting their latest book MONGUEN (a collection of life narratives from the Mapuche elders, who are the native people of Chile). The book will be presented in order to explain the process and work involved in writing and editing a book about oral memories in a specific context. With regards to their current project on Palestinian memories, L’Homme and Herbert will invite their audience to voice their opinions and any questions they may have.
